C-Sim

Inspiration

We wanted to make something related to COVID. In looking through the data we found that the CDC is tracking the rollout of vaccines and we came up with the idea of creating a COVID simulator to show the effectiveness of vaccination. We were inspired by a video that came out at the start of the pandemic on how to simulate an epidemic and took the ideas from that video and put them into a simulation.

What it does

C-Sim is a covid data visualizer and simulator. It takes live data from the CDC and uses it to simulate the spread of covid, taking various factors into account. The users can change various variables that affect the spread of covid and view data on the epidemic.

How we built it

We created everything in unity. The data was pulled from the CDC’s Database API. Coding tutorials and epidemic simulation methods used to create the product.

Challenges we ran into

We had some difficulties with how we wanted to handle simulating spread and what variables we choose to use. There were also some difficulties getting the CDC data hooked up in a timely manner.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think we are proud of our product as a proof of concept. There are many directions we could take it in and I think it could end up being a useful tool if further developed.

What we learned

We learned a lot about how to create simulations and run live graphing. This was also a good chance to put our API skills into practice.

What's next for C-Sim

Adding more information about vaccination and further data from the CDC and other COVID tracking API’s. Adding more simulations and estimations of vaccine rollout and effectiveness would be very helpful for both people and businesses in understanding the current situation and deciding when it is safe to return to normal life.
